I think I have only seen devices like the Hydrofloor in movies. They are usually used by eccentric rich villains who have a scheme to make yet even more money, and their lair changes appearance at the touch of a button to display their nefarious plan.
However, this Hydrofloor is much more useful. Imagine if you own a home (a very expensive one) and you want a have a big ballroom and an indoor pool in the same room. The Hydrofloor is there for you, decreasing the floor until it is deep enough for the water. It even has some stairs. I have no information about where the water goes, or how long it takes to transition from floor to pool, and back again.
World famous lock specialists Yale have just introduced their new Keyless door locking product, so after a drunken night you don’t need to fumble around with keys just slur the words “Open Sesame” (whilst pressing the included key fob) and the door will automagically unlock.
[Chr] picked up a pack of remote control outlets in order to reverse engineer them and build control into his own projects. These can be plugged into outlets around your house and a relay inside each module will switch whatever device is plugged into it after receiving a command from the remote.

With Philips announcing the death of their entire range of Pronto remotes a few weeks ago, and UEI following suit at CES cancelling their NeVo range too, the universal remote market seems to have taken a huge hit from the iPod Touch and the iPad. Never the less, Sony have decided to enter the fray with their own Wi-Fi and DLNA equipped touchscreen...
"HomeShare Wi-Fi Universal Remote Control - Also compatible with the network audio system is Sony’s HomeShare RMN-U1 Wi-Fi universal remote control. Featuring integrated Wi-Fi (802.11b/g), the touch-screen model controls the network audio products and certain new Sony connected BRAVIA televisions and Blu-ray Disc devices via DLNA and other home theater
First things first – this project is a blatant and obvious rip-off of John Jarvis’ power monitoring project! A few minor details have changed but I have to give him credit for a great project idea. I was intrigued by John’s power meter and it gave me an excuse to buy and try an Arduino – a handy and fun little embedded project platform! John’s power meter uses the ethernet shield and some CGI scripts, etc., to talk with his server – I went with AsyncLabs WiShield to put my power meter onto the network – my backend to get the data to the server is also a bit different (but of course).
The basic idea of the project is that an Arduino Duemilanove is continuously reading the analog pins that a couple TED Current Tranducers are connected to (one per phase). The Arduino does a little smoothing/averaging of the data and waits for an IP connection to send that data out on. Another machine has a Win32 service running on it and every minute it queries the power meter for its current data; the data that is received is stuffed into a MySQL data base. When a web request comes in to view the data a few pre-canned charts are generated real time and returned to the web user’s browser.
If you’re looking to make your own shield for the Arduino platform, you’ll definitely need to know where all the pins and holes are located on the Arduino. After doing a quick search, I was unable to find an accurate technical drawing of the new Arduino UNO and Arduino Mega 2560.
Mochad is a Linux TCP gateway daemon for the X10 CM15A RF (radio frequency) and PL (power line) controller and the CM19A RF controller. Mochad stands for Multiple Online Controllers for Home Automation Daemon.
We've been contacted by Automated Home reader (Mr Flibble) on his interesting step-by-step guide on building a custom iPad web app for the X10 CM15 Pro on Mac OSX. Even more interestingly he plans to release an open source version soon....
I have to admit that I don’t know what it is actually like to have been burglarized, but I occasionally feel the slight fear of robbery when I am away from my home for extended periods of time.
If only I had a way to check if someone has entered my home. I suppose that I could get a camera that is connected wirelessly to the Internet and point it at my front door, or I could use Kwikset’s locking mechanism.
These electronic locksets by Kwikset work with Control4 and the Schlage LiNK system to send you an email when someone enters the door (with the correct combination, of course).
The TellStick from Telldus is an intelligent and flexible USB dongle that's compatible with many of the 433.92 Mhz wireless remote switches such as Bye Bye Standby, Home Easy, Proove, Nexa, IKEA, CoCo, Elro, Sartano, DIY, and Waveman.
http://www.tweaktown.com After the craziness that was CES in Las Vegas earlier this month, I headed on up north west to San Francisco where I had the chance to meet up with several big players in the tech industry. One of them was HP who invited me to their Cupertino campus to take a video tour of their impressive Smart Home.
What is the Smart Home? It's literally a house that sits in one of the parking lots and is used as a very effective way to showcase the latest and greatest products to come from HP. It was first setup and displayed several years ago at CES in Las Vegas as a means to show customers and media a true to life implementation of connected HP technologies inside the home. The decision was made to send the house back to HP's Cupertino campus in California and set it up permanently. Distributed by Tubemogul.
I became interested in the ATtiny85 processor recently. Up till now, most of my projects were based on the Arduino's ATmega328. The ATtiny85 is just that, tiny - only 8 pins vs. 28 on the ATmega328. The photo on the left shows the new X10 temperature transmitter, with the DS1621 temperature chip on the left and the ATtiny85 on the right.
The HAI 4-Button Keyfob can be programmed to control any home control system feature such as arming/disarming your security system, turning on/off lights, opening/closing garage doors, or any othercommand you desire.
Arduino The Documentary is finally out. We have been waiting for long, but now you can see it at Vimeo (EN, ES) and download it from Archive.org (EN, ES). The file is licensed under CC-SA 3.0 and can be redistributed. The makers are working in making a batch of DVDs that will include the full interviews as well as footage of the different locations where the documentary was made (ITP, Parsons, Adafruit, Rockwellgroup, and Makerbot New York; Medialab Prado and IES Miguel Hernandez, Madrid; Laboral Centro de Arte, Gijon).
iRobot have been selling domestic cleaning bots since 2002 and they've just announced a slew of new products at CES. included in the new products coming for Spring 2011 is the sixth generation of vacuum cleaners - the new 700 range. The tiny 'PC in a Plug' device offers remote home control using the latest Apple and Android smart phones, tablet PCs and other devices. It's running Linux on a 1GHz processor and is slated to begin shipping in the 2nd quarter of 2011 retailing for under $300...
"Although HomeTroller-Mini is tiny in stature and fits in the palm of your hand, it is big on features and performance. The unit sports an energy efficient 1.0 GHz Linux platform that will outperform any other comparable gateway device. As with other HomeTrollers™, HomeTroller-Mini supports Z-Wave® and many other existing home automation technologies. Alerts, announcements and reminders may be issued by email, text message or by voice (text to speech). Home energy usage may also be monitor and controlled with HomeTroller-Mini.
More Smart Home goodness from Korean electronics giants, LG with today's announcement of their new range of "THINQ Technology" appliances. Connected to a smart grid meter the system schedules the washing machine to run at the most economical times whilst grabbing updates for it and the oven via the Internet for added features. Remote diagnostics and control via a computer or tablet is available too and LG's upcoming Hom-Bot automated vacuum cleaner will come equipped with a camera to monitor your home and will even feed your pets...
What's this? LG just released PR on this little black box - the ST600 - which bears a striking resemblance to the Apple TV. At just 11cms square the Wi-Fi equipped unit gives any old flat screen DLNA streaming playback as well as a web browser and various other LG apps (any of this sounding familiar?). Read on for the skinny ahead of the launch at next weeks CES.
