Instead of focusing solely on 'what we teach and how we teach it' as teachers, creating the right environment can provide additional support for improved learning outcomes. In my classroom, I could utilise the second strategy of this article (rethink the classroom layout) to transform learning. Traditionally, in a maths classroom, the questions are written on the board for students to complete. Students are expected to complete the questions individually and discussion is often perceived as off task behaviour. By changing the layout of the classroom to include groups of desks, students can begin to learn through collaboration. It opens up the opportunity for students engage in higher levels of thinking such as creating questions for their peers and evaluating peer answers. Students can support each other and engage in participatory teaching methods where knowledge retention is at its highest.

This article outlines a set of tools that can be used to amplify student voice and spark creativity. These tools allow the students to create multimedia presentations using audio/music and video tools/apps. The list includes 20 iPad apps that help students express themselves and amplify their voice through various products. These products can be published online and thus boost student confidence.

How To Kill Learner Curiosity In 12 Easy Steps.
Killing a learner’s natural curiosity doesn’t happen overnight. It can take as long as 12 years, and in some rare cases even that isn’t long enough.
Learning environments focused on standards, assessment, and compliance allow for the implementation of research-based strategies in pursuit of streams of data to prove that learning is happening. Curiosity is nice, but it’s a monumental challenge to measure.

I remember teachers who taught strictly according to these 12 rules. Reminder to self - strive to never subject my own students to the same experience.

Preparing a child for the world that doesn’t yet exist is not an easy task for any teacher. Step back and look at that picture from a broad perspective. What are the critical 21st-century skills every learner needs to survive and succeed in our world? What abilities and traits will serve them in a time that’s changing and developing so rapidly?
