Since the outbreak of COVID-19, there have been a large number of articles exploring the impact of the pandemic and subsequent lockdowns on the future of higher education. One area of interest is the design and delivery of international higher education. Could the coronavirus be a catalyst for change?

The present study has been undertaken to examine the growth trajectory of the higher education (HE) sector across all the countries in the GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) region, the transition toward internationalization, quality initiatives undertaken, and movement toward regional integration. The study aims to provide a review for the shifting paradigm through concepts of internationalization in the literature review and to probe on the themes facing the GCC in their adaptation to internationalization. The study is based on secondary data, mainly of the websites of 167 universities/higher education institutions (HEIs) of GCC, which were analyzed for their adaptation to internationalization. The results show the various perspectives of internationalization with the suggestion on regional integration. It is hoped the study would provide the HEIs and the policy makers with a strong foundation on their internationalization efforts.

Internationalisation is not an end in itself, but a driver for change and improvement – it should help generate the skills required in the 21st century, spur on innovation and create alternatives while, ultimately, fostering job creation. Yet the current economic climate calls for a closer examination of the tangible benefits of internationalisation for the economies and societies of, and beyond, the OECD.

The Learning Without Borders (LWB) professional development website contains key resources and leadership development material for staff involved in transnational education (TNE) activities in higher education. The site may be used to support or augment academic staff development programs, by individuals working through modules either independently or at the direction of others, or to be used whenever information is required by TNE leaders in their work.
