Over the last thirteen years or so, the number of sites on WordPress.com has grown — a lot. Every one of those sites gets a unique wordpress.com address. And since there are millions of sites created each year, it means the address you’d like isn’t always available.
Today, a whole new range of possibility opens up: free .blog subdomains.
What’s a subdomain? Glad you asked! This site’s address is is blog.wordpress.com. Here, wordpress.com is the domain and blog is the subdomain.
Say your name is Molly and you’re starting a food blog. The domain mollysfoodblog.wordpress.com — that is, the subdomain “mollysfoodblog” on wordpress.com — is already taken by someone. Or you’re starting a website to offer tech advice; but there’s already a site using techadvice.wordpress.com, drat!
Now you have more options: you can choose to use a free subdomain with a .blog address, like mollys.food.blog or advice.tech.blog. There’s a list of popular .blog domains we’ve reserved just for this:
art.blog business.blog car.blog code.blog data.blog design.blog family.blog fashion.blog finance.blog fitness.blog food.blog game.blog health.blog home.blog law.blog movie.blog music.blog news.blog photo.blog poetry.blog politics.blog school.blog science.blog sport.blog tech.blog travel.blog video.blog water.blog These .blog subdomains work just like the regular wordpress.com subdomains — they don’t expire, they’re free to use for the lifetime of your site, and you can always replace them with a custom domain at any time. As many site creators know, it’s daunting to find images to represent the message you’re trying to put out into the world — especially if you don’t have the equipment or time to make your own.
At WordPress.com, we’re constantly striving to make it as easy as possible to create beautiful websites that represent who you are and what you stand for. We’re excited to announce that we’ve been working hard with Pexels and other diversity-focused image-library partners so that everyone with a WordPress.com or Jetpack-connected site can realize their vision with the right stock photos.
To use these images, just head to your Media Library and select Free Photo Library before searching for any image you need. You can also do this from the Add Media option within a post or page: Learn more / En savoir plus / Mehr erfahren: https://www.scoop.it/t/wordpress-annotum-for-education-science-journal-publishing/?&tag=Photos

Automatic updates are a great thing. Just so long as they actually automatically update. Why the rapid release of a new edition? Well, it turns out that version 4.9.3 of the popular website CMS didn't just fix 34 bugs. It also introduced a honking great big bug that means sites that support automatic background updates will fail to update automatically. Yeucch! Outdated versions of three popular WordPress plugins suffer from a "critical" zero-day vulnerability that enables an attacker to take over a website.
The bug is a PHP object injection flaw that affects the following plugins: Appointments (versions prior to 2.2.2), Flickr Gallery (versions prior to 1.5.3), and RegistrationMagic-Custom Registration Forms (versions prior to 3.7.9.3).
Together, those plugins have a combined user base of over 21,000 WordPress customers. All three have already received a fix for the security issue, which is rated "Critical" with a CVSS rating of 9.8. Keeping up with social media can feel like a full-time job these days — and for many it is. Posting your content on Twitter and Facebook during specific hours, and keeping things evenly spaced out, means that you need to tend to your profiles pretty often.
We wanted to make it easier for WordPress.com users to create great content on their websites — and share it across different social media networks.
The new Advanced Social Media feature for Business and Premium plan users (and for Jetpack Professional and Premium users) lets you schedule specific times that your content will be automatically shared on places like Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn. You can also preview your social updates before sending them, so you know exactly how it will look when it goes out.
With Advanced Social Media, you can:
Resurface older “evergreen” posts to share them to your newer followers. Plan your social media posts in bulk to save time. Craft messages specifically to fit the profile or network where you are posting.
Preview upcoming tweets, Facebook posts, or LinkedIn updates. See the previous shares of the post.
You can access all of these features by selecting the “Share” button under a post in your posts list.

WordPress 4.8.2 is out, featuring nine security fixes website owners will want to apply, well, now.
All told, there have been six updates this year featuring security fixes, including January’s silent patch for a nasty zero day, this being the first since May’s v4.7.5.
The maintenance side of the update features six other software updates but focussing on the bit that bothers Naked Security readers most, security, we see five Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) flaws (a perennially popular attack vector that refuses to die), two path or directory traversal issues, and one covering an open redirect. With the huge number of sites running WordPress, and the frequency with which attackers exploit vulnerabilities on the platform to launch malicious attacks, it makes sense for self-hosting bloggers to update their systems as soon as possible.
Security vulnerabilities are frequently uncovered in third-party WordPress plugins, but the above fix addresses bugs in the main WordPress content management system itself. Meaning that just about any site running WordPress could be at risk.
Fortunately, updating is pretty easy. Go to your WordPress admin panel and choose Dashboard > Updates.
Of course, it's always good practice to test a new version of the software on a non-live version of your site first (often known as a staging site) - just in case.
Since WordPress 3.7 was released in October 2013, the software has come with the option of automatic security updates - hopefully ensuring that many site admins won't have to worry so much about whether they have kept their software updated or not.
But, of course, there will always be those who don't have automatic updates enabled and may miss the news. Learn more / En savoir plus / Mehr erfahren: http://www.scoop.it/t/wordpress-annotum-for-education-science-journal-publishing/?tag=Cybersecurity

Podcasting on WordPress.com While many podcasters are using self-hosted WordPress.org sites, some attendees did not know that WordPress.com also supports podcasting.
Did you know: according to Todd Cochrane from Blubrry, creators of the PowerPress podcasting plugin for self-hosted WordPress sites, there are over 200,000 active podcasts in iTunes. Since Blubrry powers over 60 thousand of them, at least 30% of all currently active podcasts are running WordPress!
WordPress.com makes it very easy to get started with podcasting. All you need to do is create a new post category, change a few settings in your dashboard, and submit your podcast to iTunes and other catalogs. Just follow these steps to launch your podcast (if you don’t have a WordPress.com site yet, get one here).
Some of the advantages of podcasting with WordPress.com:
Simplicity: Both your website and your media are hosted in the same place, making it easier to manage your content. Security: Your podcast and site will be protected by WordPress.com against attacks and spam. Backups: All content published on WordPress.com is protected and backed up so you don’t have to think about it. Maintenance-Free: Your WordPress.com site is always running the latest version of WordPress, and you will never have to worry about updates. We continue to work on tools for podcasters here at WordPress.com, and would love your input on how we can make them better.
